Burpengary commuters are set to benefit from a major overhaul of their local station, which will also create 250 jobs for the region.
State Member for Kurwongbah, Shane King, today announced that the Palaszczuk Government will invest close to $29 million to install more accessible infrastructure, including lifts plus accessible car parks, raised platforms and a bike enclosure.
It comes after Mr King presented Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey a community petition calling for an upgrade.
“Across the community families and commuters are benefitting from the huge upgrades at Morayfield and Dakabin, and with this petition we made it clear that we want the same for Burpengary,” Mr King said.
“These upgrades are about making it easier for our older locals, people with a disability and families who use prams to catch a train.
“Crucially, they’ll also lock in jobs in construction for 250 people at a time when we need jobs the most.”
Mr Bailey said Queenslanders have stepped up in helping to manage the health response to COVID-19, and because of that, the Palaszczuk Government is able to get on with Queensland’s plan for economic recovery, which includes creating jobs and delivering better public transport.
“Shane King has been a big advocate for his community, fighting for better station access and more jobs, and we’ve listened,” Mr Bailey said.
“We’ve delivered more train services than ever before, we’re building the $5.4 billion Cross River Rail and now we’re going to upgrade Burpengary station in one of the Moreton Bay Region’s biggest growing communities.
Mr Bailey said it added to a $357 million program to upgrade stations across the train network, including upgrades at Banyo, Auchenflower, Cannon Hill, Alderley, Dinmore, Graceville, Nambour, Newmarket, Boondall, Morayfield and Strathpine.
