Join hundreds of thousands of Aussies in the country’s largest community tree-planting event this Sunday, July 30 by rolling up your sleeves and taking part in Moreton Bay’s National Tree Day celebrations.
To help mark the 22nd annual National Tree Day, council is hosting three tree-planting activities at Beachmere, Rothwell and Strathpine, along with a host of community and school sites - all needing your help.
Mayor Allan Sutherland said more than 4,700 seedlings were waiting to be planted across three council sites and invited residents to don their gardening gloves, dig deep and help make a positive impact on the environment.
“Every year, our region’s tree day troops smash it right out of the park, digging and planting seedlings across Moreton Bay - and we want your help to do it all again in 2017,” Mayor Sutherland said.
“Over the past decade, volunteers have helped to plant more than 50,000 trees, many of which are now flourishing at local parks and reserves.
“To plant a seedling and watch it grow is definitely a rewarding experience, so get together with family and friends, get involved and give our environment a helping hand.”
As part of National Tree Day celebrations, a number of schools in the region will also be getting involved on Friday, July 28.
Division 11 Councillor Darren Grimwade said he was glad to be able to throw his support behind Samford Valley Steiner School’s National Tree Day event and provide a donation towards new native trees and plants.
“Not only does an event like this have a positive contribution on our environment, it also gives students the best opportunity to learn about the flora and fauna that make up Moreton Bay,” Cr Grimwade said.
“It’s exciting to know that our youngest residents are championing this cause, and it’s exactly the reason why council has committed more than $5 million in 2017/18 towards environmental initiatives like National Tree Day.”
