Scenic Rim Eat Local Week a Perfect School Holiday Activity


Go nutty, count bees… pull carrots, make cheese…

Did you know that each year the Scenic Rim produces 600 million carrots and that if you put them end to end they would go around the world two and a half times? And there’s plenty more flavoury fun facts where this came from! To parents and carers wondering what to do with the kids this coming school holidays – relax! Scenic Rim Eat Local Week has you covered with a packed program of edu-tainment that will fill their bellies and their brains!

Celebrating a decade of deliciousness in 2021, Eat Local Week will be held from June 26 through to July 4. It is the biggest program in the event’s 10 year history with over 125 events across 48 locations.

Without further ado, for the best tech free school holiday activities ever for the kids…..

  1. Learn about butterflies, bees and bugs with Jasmine Urban Farm @ Running Creek Beef, a hands-on workshop they will love! These run all week.

  2. Visit Summer Land Camels. The Little Farmer Humpty Day is brilliant for the little ones as are the Farm Tours!

  3. Go nutty - visit Greenlee Farm for the Tour & Tasting and see what goes into producing Australia’s tastiest macadamias. Don’t forget to try the honey macadamia brittle!

  4. Count bees and walk an alpaca at Picnic in the Petals with Pretty Produce & the Mountview Alpaca Farm.

  5. Visit Tommerup's Dairy Farm – the Back Stage Pass and Breakfast with the Jersey Girls are two totally unique events on this 6th generation working dairy farm!

  6. Book the Kids Bush Tucker Tracker @ Mt Barney Lodge, they even get to find their own tucker!

  7. Cheese Please! Don’t miss the Kids Cheese Making Workshop @ Towri Sheep Cheeses.

  8. Grab a packed picnic @ Picnic Real Food Bar and take in spectacular scenery around Tamborine – make sure you do the treetops walk!

  9. Beaudesert Street Food Festival on Saturday June 26 has creative stalls for the kids, a huge range of street food and lots of entertainment.

  10. Winter Harvest Festival - one of the best regional celebrations in Australia - Saturday July 3. There’s loads and loads for the kids – music, dancing, tractor pulling (yes, that’s right), tastings and rides!

And if you needed some more flavoury fun facts….

  • Carrots take between 100 and 120 days to grow.

  • They can come in orange, red, purple, yellow and even white, but orange is the most popular.

  • If you eat too many carrots, you can turn orange! Steve Jobs once had a diet of only carrots and his nose turned orange.

  • 88% of a carrot is water!
